Webmail.us and Rackspace Collaborate on New Infrastructure to Power the Webmail.us Email Hosting Platform
BLACKSBURG, VA (PRWeb) December 4, 2006 -- Webmail.us (www.webmail.us), a leading provider of email hosting services to more than 29,000 small, medium, and geographically dispersed businesses, today announced that it engaged Rackspace Managed Hosting™ (www.rackspace.com) to help design, develop, and deploy a new infrastructure to power the company's email hosting platform. The two companies worked closely in an effort to build an infrastructure platform that accomplishes three primary goals. First, the platform needed built-in redundancy at all levels of the configuration. Second, the platform must scale with the growth of the email hosting customer base. And finally, the cost of the overall platform must scale as it grows, especially as the demands for unlimited storage and bandwidth increase over time.
Webmail.us has been experiencing rapid growth, adding more than 16,000 businesses to its email hosting system in the last twelve months and credits a change in its hosting infrastructure with the ability to keep the pace. The company originally deployed its configuration on branded servers running Intel processors but found that the application depended heavily on the speed of the central processor and its ability to access the disk space quickly. The large servers had difficulty performing and also made it difficult to scale the application as the company grew.
Webmail.us approached Rackspace for help in engineering an alternative hosting environment with many independent clusters of machines, with each cluster dedicated to a single process, such as spam filtering or POP3--and with server and network-level redundancy built into every application. With this approach, each application has its own redundancy and can scale-out separately from the other applications. When one or more servers fail within a cluster, there are many more to handle the load. Webmail.us runs commodity "white-box" Linux servers built with standard off-the-shelf components such as AMD processors and SATA hard drives. The email hosting system is designed to scale efficiently to thousands of servers, and tolerate hardware failures by automatically rerouting traffic away from faulty machines.
"Rackspace tapped into their deep expertise in working with numerous software-as-a-service vendors and showed us a new path to build a customized infrastructure that supports our specific needs," said Bill Boebel, chief technology officer at Webmail.us. "Our email hosting system is now powered by more than 175 servers, and we're adding close to a dozen per month. By hiring Rackspace to handle infrastructure operations and server management, we have built an architecture that can sustain our growth and enable us to focus on development of innovative email services."
"Rackspace has helped engineer thousands of hosting environments for our customers over our history. We've taken this cumulative knowledge to develop a hosting architecture tailored specifically for hosted software vendors like Webmail.us," said Paul Froutan, vice president of Research and Development, Rackspace Managed Hosting. "Upon understanding the Webmail.us growth curve and reliability requirements, we knew that a highly-distributed hosting infrastructure was the right solution. Though our customized approach to solving customer issues, we realized that large, multi-processor servers are not the right strategy for everyone and that often a smaller, distributed architecture can deliver a better overall performance at a lower cost."
